چکیده

We present an algorithm to estimate velocity fields from low resolution video recordings. The algorithm does not attempt to identify and track individual vehicles, nor does it attempt to estimate derivatives of the field of pixel intensities. Rather, we compress a frame by obtaining an intensity profile in each lane along the direction of traffic flow. The speed estimate is then computed by searching for a best matching profile in a frame at a later time. Because the algorithm does not need high quality images, it is directly applicable to a compressed format digital video stream, such as mpeg, from conventional traffic video cameras. We illustrate the procedure using a 15 minute long VHS recording to obtain speed estimates on a one mile stretch of highway I-80 in Berkeley, California.

Detection of inconsistent regions in video streams

Humans have a general understanding about their environment. We possess a sense of distinction between what is consistent and inconsistent about the environment based on our prior experience. Any aspect of the scene that does not fit into this definition of normalcy tends to be classified as a novel event. An example of this is a casual observer standing over a bridge on a freeway, tracking veh...

Markov Random Fields for Super-resolution and Texture Synthesis

Suppose we want to digitally enlarge a photograph. The input is a single, low-resolution image, and the desired output is an estimate of the high-resolution version of that image. This problem can be phrased as one of “image interpolation”: we seek to interpolate the pixel values between our observed samples. Image interpolation is sometimes called super-resolution, since we are estimating data...

Estimating and Validating Models of Microscopic Driver Behavior with Video Data

This report describes the enhancements to the video data collection of the Berkeley Highway Laboratory (BHL), a unique surveillance system on a section of I-80 freeway in the city of Emeryville. We also present the development of advanced machine vision algorithms to process the video data to generate vehicle trajectories. A pilot application of the BHL system produced trajectories of over 4700...

A PIV Algorithm for Estimating Time-Averaged Velocity Fields

A PIV algorithm is presented for estimating time-averaged or phase-averaged velocity fields. The algorithm can be applied to situations where signal strength is not sufficient for standard cross correlation techniques, such as a low number of particle images in an interrogation spot, or poor image quality. The algorithm can also be used to increase the spatial resolution of measurements by allo...

Estimating the Capacity of the Basic Freeway Section Using Headway Method in Developing Countries (Case Study: Iran

Although there are remarkable differences in drivers’ behavior as well as vehicles characteristics, road capacity estimationmethods in developing countries are same as developed ones. So, the discrepancy between the theoretical andpractical values of capacity is inevitable. Although, capacity estimation methods can be classified based on numerousparameters, in developing count...
